We're in an open meadow, he thought. Carral heard the man leading his horse curse, and then something flicked over his shoulder.

"Ride on!" his guard called, and Carral found himself on his own. The lead from his horse had been thrown over his shoulder, and he grabbed at it desperately, knowing what would happen to him if his horse were to tangle a foot in that.

His guard had gone back to help his companions, and Carral raced on into the darkness, not knowing if he pointed his horse toward a barn or a stone wall or a sturdy oak. Disaster, he was sure, would meet him at any moment, for this was nothing short of madness, to keep on so—but what choice had he? The men pursuing him would certainly take him back to Menwyn if he were caught. He didn't think they would kill him in his evening blue surcoat, but he might be wrong at that. He drove her forward, trying to let her find her way while still keeping her going, west, away from the men who pursued him. If his guards drove their pursuers off then they would find him. For all he knew he was visible for furlongs. If the Wills won, then it would be better if he pressed on They might give up after a time, knowing that there was a battle going on and their fellows perhaps falling.

His mare began to fight him again, throwing her head and shaking her bridle. He eased his hold on the reins and she veered to the left, this time throwing him to the ground. He landed on one shoulder and the pain cut into him like a sword. He felt the mare's lead ripped from his fingers and he was horseless.

Staggering up, he called her name quietly.” Lady Gray," he whispered.” Lady . . ." But she ignored his entreaties. Nothing he tried would coax her back, and though he could hear her not far off, she stayed out of his reach. Twice he stumbled and fell. And then he sat down and cursed her under his breath. Now,
